My Story

I enjoy reinterpreting historical themes with a contemporary twist. Many of my favourite historical, gardening, and literary figures—such as Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, Marie Antoinette, Queen Elizabeth I, Vita Sackville-West, Gertrude Jekyll, William Shakespeare, and Noël Coward—have inspired my scarves. Each detail within a design is a rich tapestry of references, narrating the story of a characterful figure, a garden designed by a renowned gardener, or an architectural detail drawn from the work of Robert Adam.  I also take inspiration from pieces of furniture, elements of a famous William Morris wallpaper or one of his quotes, or from riding tackle and historical riding habits, transforming them into playful, repeating motifs.

In addition to my own range, I have collaborated with many prestigious cultural organisations and heritage brands, including Highgrove, The Royal Collection Trust, Westminster Abbey, Kettle’s Yard and Penhaligon’s, among others.

MY DESIGN PROCESS

My design process begins with research and sketching, followed by the creation of hand-crafted lino cuts that form the foundation of each design. I then develop the narrative of the pattern on paper before briefing the printer, who prints the design onto luxury 100% silk in the selected colourway. Each scarf is finished by hand.

MY BACKGROUND

After five years studying Fashion Design in Ireland, I moved to London to pursue my creative ambitions and immerse myself in its rich cultural landscape. In 2013, I established Rory Hutton Limited and have since grown the brand organically through both personal work and creative collaborations.
