Inspired by one of the most recognisable pieces of furniture associated with the Arts & Crafts Movement, the Sussex Scarf celebrates the marriage of beauty and utility championed by William Morris and his artistic circle.
At the centre of the design is my hand-carved linocut of the Sussex chair. Based on traditional vernacular furniture and associated with designer and architect Philip Webb, the simple rush-seated chair was produced by Morris & Co. and became a favourite of the artistic Victorian interior.
Behind it appears William Morris's celebrated maxim, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” The words perfectly capture the philosophy behind the chair itself: an everyday object elevated through thoughtful design and craftsmanship.
The original chair and lettering were drawn, carved and printed by hand as linocuts before being brought together in the finished design and translated onto silk in Italy.
