Inspired by the celebrated gardener Gertrude Jekyll, Gertrude’s Garden 90 captures the abundant planting, rich colour and carefully composed informality for which her gardens became famous.
One of the most influential figures in British garden design, Jekyll was closely associated with the Arts & Crafts movement and frequently collaborated with architect Edwin Lutyens. Her celebrated planting schemes combined painterly drifts of colour with an extraordinary knowledge of plants.
The scarf brings together peonies, roses, delphiniums, pansies, geraniums and other garden favourites around a Lutyens-style bench. Perched at its centre is Jekyll’s cat Thomas, a playful reference to her affection for cats and her chapter “Pussies in the Garden” in Children and Gardens, published in 1908.
Each element originated as a hand-carved linocut by Rory Hutton before being assembled into the finished composition and translated onto silk in Italy.
