A celebration of William Morris and the Arts & Crafts Movement, this 45cm silk scarf centres on one of Morris’s most enduring ideas:
“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
The words are rendered in my own Arts & Crafts-inspired lettering and surrounded by a richly patterned border of pomegranates, mistletoe and sunflowers, motifs recalling the natural forms that filled the textiles, wallpapers and decorative arts of the late nineteenth century.
Each element was originally drawn, carved and printed by hand as a linocut, preserving the character of the carved block in the finished design before being translated onto silk in Italy.
At 45cm square, it can be worn as a pocket square, neatly around the neck or added to a bag. Presented in a printed card wallet, it also makes an ideal gift.
