Created for Oscar Wilde 125: Rory Hutton Reimagines the House Beautiful, Rory Hutton's 2025 exhibition at Shapero Modern on New Bond Street, this silk scarf draws upon the decorative world of Oscar Wilde and the Aesthetic Movement.
Inspired by Wilde's essay The House Beautiful, the exhibition explored his belief in surrounding oneself with beautiful things. Large chrysanthemums unfurl across the design, their exaggerated forms recalling one of the flowers most closely associated with Aesthetic decoration in the late nineteenth century.
Rendered in ivory against a deep aubergine ground, with fresh green leaves and a richly patterned violet vase, the composition celebrates the Aesthetic ideal of beauty for beauty's sake.
The original artwork was created through linocut, preserving the bold lines and subtle imperfections of the hand-carved blocks in the finished design.
Printed in Italy on silk twill and finished with rolled edges.
