Inspired by the artists, designers and tastemakers of the nineteenth-century Aesthetic and Arts & Crafts movements, the Aesthete scarf brings together some of the objects and ideas that transformed Victorian attitudes to art, decoration and the home.
At its heart is William Morris's celebrated maxim, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Alongside it sits the Sussex chair, based on vernacular furniture and associated with Philip Webb and Morris & Co., which became an emblem of the artistic interior.
Sunflowers, one of the great symbols of the Aesthetic Movement, appear in Chinese-style vases, recalling the passion for blue-and-white porcelain shared by aesthetes including James McNeill Whistler and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Together these motifs evoke the world of William Morris, Oscar Wilde and the artistic circle that championed beauty in everyday life.
Each element began as an original hand-carved linocut before being brought together in the finished design and translated onto silk in Italy.
