Created for Oscar Wilde 125: Rory Hutton Reimagines the House Beautiful, Rory Hutton's 2025 exhibition at Shapero Modern on New Bond Street, this silk scarf draws upon Oscar Wilde's fascination with blue-and-white china and the ideals of the Aesthetic Movement.
Inspired by Wilde's essay The House Beautiful, the exhibition explored his belief in surrounding oneself with beautiful things. The design brings together a collection of vessels and ceramics, centred around a decorative blue-and-white plate and Wilde's wonderfully characteristic remark: “I find it harder and harder every day to live up to my blue china.”
Each element began as a drawing before being carved into lino and printed by hand, giving the finished design the distinctive marks and textures of the printmaking process. Shades of blue and white recall the ceramics that inspired Wilde and his fellow Aesthetes, finished with a contrasting green border.
Printed in Italy on silk twill and finished with rolled edges.
