“The Lyon would not leave her desolate…”
Edmund Spenser, The Faerie Queene

Inspired by Edmund Spenser’s great Elizabethan epic The Faerie Queene, this silk scarf takes as its subject the magnificent Lyon encountered by Una during her journey.

Spenser describes the beast as a creature of terrifying strength who, on meeting Una, is suddenly overcome by her beauty and innocence. Rather than attack her, the Lyon becomes her devoted protector.

Originally created for ARTVERSE, Rory Hutton’s 2026 exhibition exploring the relationship between poetry and art, the design began as a hand-carved linocut. The golden Lyon strides across a richly patterned ground of twisting leaves and flowers, translating the romance and drama of Spenser’s imagined world into silk.
